Time To Say Goodbye

October 31, 2023

It has been a blast but for now it is time to move on.

This article originated from the Xero blog. The XU Hub is an independent news and media platform - for Xero users, by Xero users. Any content, imagery and associated links below are directly from Xero and not produced by the XU Hub.

Thank You

It has been a pleasure to work with you.

I trust this message finds you in good health and high spirits.

If I were to turn back the clock to 2018, I was struggling emotionally and financially. I knew I had to steer my life towards something meaningful, and that’s how I journeyed into building Hindsight. I envisioned a world where accountants and bookkeepers would be empowered to serve their clients with data-driven insights. I believed that our product would serve as a catalyst for transformative change in the accounting industry.

That vision hasn’t materialised. It’s been a humbling experience. Despite our collective best efforts, Hindsight didn’t become the revolution I anticipated. This journey has forced me to revisit some fundamental truths and make some tough calls.

I've come to a realisation: the accounting industry doesn't primarily need more software tools; it needs better education, superior training, and a deeper human touch. Software was not, is not, and will never be the silver bullet solution to the challenges we face in the industry.

As a consequence of this newfound clarity, I've decided to discontinue the Hindsight platform at the end of 2023. Details of what that means for you are contained in the FAQs below.

It's not a decision I take lightly. I invested everything into this endeavour, emotionally, physically, and financially to the detriment of my family. But I kept going because you believed in me and what I was trying to achieve. But the thought of continuing down this path takes me back to the emotional landscape of 2018—a territory I have vowed never to revisit.

So, what’s next?

I am shifting gears to return to my roots in accounting and in particular the way in which we educate the next generation. It’s where I can add the most value to advisors and in turn small business owners. In essence, I am going back to where I started—but this time, as a more evolved, more informed, and more committed professional.

You can follow progress at Accademy.

If you were receiving value form the Hindsight platform, then we would urge you to look at Xenon Connect (more details in the FAQs). We have looked at the competitive landscape and I believe this is the closest comparative product both in terms of functionality and company values.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to each one of you for walking this path with me. Your support and patience have been nothing short of exemplary. While Hindsight may not continue, I am optimistic we will cross paths again, perhaps at an accounting conference near you.

Your success remains my passion, and I remain available for any queries and questions you may wish to have going forward. I look forward to hearing about your continued triumphs in delivering exceptional services to small businesses everywhere.

Wishing you nothing but the best,

Jon Jenkins - CEO Hindsight

FAQs Hindsight Platform Discontinuation

When will I stop having access to the platform?
All user access to the platform will be removed from midnight 31st December 2023. You will not be able to use the system after this date.

What will happen to client data?
Active users (triallists, people who have logged in the last 6 months prior to this notice for clarity that is Tuesday 25th April 2023) your client data will be deleted commencing 1st January 2024.

We will disconnect organisations from Xero and all client data will be deleted from our servers.

Inactive users (accounts where no users have logged in since Tuesday 25th April 2023) your client data will start being deleted from Wednesday 1st November 2023.

If you wish to start the process now, then you can follow the steps below to disconnect and delete organisations.

Disconnect organisation
Delete organisation

What will happen to practice data?
Once all client data for your practice has been deleted, we will then delete all practice user data and all practice data from our servers.

When will my billing stop?
As Hindsight bills monthly in arrears provided you continue to use the system up until 31st December 2023 then your last bill will be raised in January 2024. As we only bill for clients on ‘paid’ plans if you downgrade clients to the free plan, disconnect organisations or tell us that you wish to close your account before then your billing will stop in the month following those changes.

When will my Direct Debit be cancelled?
Once your final bill has been settled, we will cancel the Direct Debit mandate we have in place with GoCardless.

Can you recommend any alternative apps?
Xenon Connect would love to offer existing (and previous) Hindsight partners the ability to connect as many organisations as wished to Xenon Connect until 31 December 2023. This will help to ensure that you are able to thoroughly investigate whether Xenon Connect is the right fit for you and your practice without any financial barrier. Payment details would only be required later if you agree that you wish to continue using Xenon Connect after 31 December 2023. You can find out more about Xenon Connect on the link below.

Xenon Connect

What are the major differences between Xenon Connect and Hindsight?

Client Access – you can give clients access to monitor alerts and potentially take corrective action themselves. At the very least they can see the type of errors being made.
CTA – you can create Call To Action buttons and sprinkle them around the system (coupled with the Client Access very powerful). If someone needs some help, they can act right within the system.
Custom Tags – create custom tags to use throughout Xenon as a way of filtering so you can split your portfolio by the frequency of their bookkeeping, create team names/pods or who uploads the bills to Hubdoc are just a few examples.
Xenon Exact – the ability to set a default data check period for a particular period. Perhaps you just want to check the most recent quarter rather than all transactions. This default is currently only available at Practice level, but the medium-term roadmap is to allow you to override at Client level.
Activity Banding – you can create ranges and assign colour bandings to the ranges for transaction volumes to highlight any key anomalies or trends.
Team Members – can set granular access rights as you can toggle different user rights on/off so you can create your own user access rights for different staff types.
Activity – transaction volumes can be shown as transaction date or posting date allowing you to bill based on the level of transactions posted in a period not just the date of the transaction.
Weekly update email – great reminder of what needs doing to keep you updated on clients that need assistance.
Corporation tax calculator – get an ongoing dialogue with clients going by updating them on the corporation tax liability as you go through the year not 9 months after the end of it.

Why leave it there?
